The Beach Clean Up

On the 8th of March, at 9:00am, at Okahu bay, a group of six children from room 9 came together to clean up the beach in order to save our marine life. Our oceans are, therefore, able to stay healthy, and remain a beautiful part of our planet.

A member of Kelly Tarlton, Debbie explained why we were doing this project.  After the motivational talk, she handed out gloves and black bags.

We found lots more rubbish than we expected such as bracelets, lighters, Styrofoam, plastic bags, bottle caps, and a lot more man-made objects that may prove harmful to sea life.

By the end of the day, our group had found bags full of man-made rubbish. The most disappointing part of the day was that we only went half way down the beach! Think of all the trash on the rest of the beach. It just shows the lack of human responsibility towards the marine life that access this waste yard to find food. However, their bodies are not designed to digest such substances and plastic and Styrofoam should never be eaten by any living thing.

We would like to thank the participants that gave up their weekend to help us save the beach. It was a memorable experience!

Students, their parents and teachers - Georgia, Adrian, Mykie, Jayden, Connor, Liam, Mrs Watson, Minnie (the dog), Miss Lim, Mr Jay Naicker, Ms Davies-Zwarts, and Mr Dene Green helped us clean up the beach.

P.S Georgia Davies-
Zwarts was the only female student representative from Room 9! It would be great to have more girls participating in this event next time.

Well done everyone~!

Swimming sports

Go Cooper, Go Ngata, Go Mansfield. Splash, boom, oh my gosh! It’s cold!

It’s our Swimming Sports! The Swimming Sports was held on the 7th of March in our swimming pool. We had a beautiful and scorching sunny day.

There were relays, competitive and non-competitive activities so that everyone could participate. Non-competitive participants had fun games in the water. For the first game, they had a white barrel which one person had to float on while two other people had to push the barrel to the other side and back. For the second game, they had 8 people from each whanau, and with a rope, they had to pull one person to the other side of the pool and back.

There was some crazy, cool, fantastic and amazing dancing coming from some girls and boys, Miss Lim and Ms Koraua. Lots of people were cheering. There were also parents shouting out for their children. The sausages were delicious and juicies and moosies were on sale because it was a hot day.

Mansfield came first with points but it doesn’t matter because we are still the best. Finally, it was the end of the day. We were all exhausted but we didn’t want it to end. It was the best swimming sports day ever! As soon as we got home, we hit the bed with a loud bang and went to sleep and others probably did too!

We are the best class

Hi everyone

I am Miss Ah Young Lim, the teacher for Room 9. I have been teaching at Howick Intermediate School since 2007. It is my pleasure to work with a bunch of wonderful students this year.

Room 9 students are responsible, respectful, kind, friendly, enthusiastic, creative, cooperative and athletic.

In other words …

We are the best class in the school! J

In our first inquiry cycle, we are learning about sustainability and our class topic is ‘Sustaining Our Environment’. We have three group focuses - Kauri trees, Energy and Water Pollution, and Marine life.

We are looking forward to sharing our learning during this inquiry cycle with everyone.

Thank you for visiting our Room 9 blog.

Have a lovely day everyone!
